The Difference between ‘Natural’ and ‘Organic’ beauty products.
The simplest way to explain this is to think about food. A runner bean is totally ‘natural’ but it may have been grown with pesticides and chemical fertilizers. These chemicals leach into the vegetable and so into your body when eaten.
With skin products – remember what you put on your skin – goes in (think skin patches).
Organic simply means that the botanical product was grown in a chemical-free environment. Natural on the other hand means that the final product has been made from botanical resources without any use petroleum or non botanical ingredients. However, there is no guarantee that the natural raw ingredients were grown without the use of chemicals and pesticides. Therefore organic has to be best.
Unfortunately, the story does not end there. In Europe and America, there is currently nothing to stop companies labeling their products ‘natural’ and/or ‘organic’ if they contain just one organic or natural ingredient. The only sure way is to look for certification that they are organic or natural – if not – be very careful and read the ingredients.
All certifying bodies require that at least 95% of the product is organic. For products that are certified organic, one will notice there is a stamp of approval or states it is has been certified as organic. To make things more confusing for consumers, there are products available that state they are 'made with organic ingredients'. This means there is at least 70% of organic material that has been used. This is often the case with organic companies producing an SPF cream; as it is impossible to make an organic SPF cream with 95% organic ingredients due to the fact there is no such thing as an organically certified sun filter (most commonly Titanium dioxide and Zinc Oxide). These are both naturally occurring minerals, but coming from rocks it is easy to see how they cannot be ‘certified’ organic. So it is not always bad that a product is not 100% organic – one just has to tread carefully.
Organic food does not contain more vitamins or give better nutritional value than non-organic. It is what it does NOT contain that is important. It is not loaded with chemicals and pesticides that cause real harm to the human body and the long term effects of some of these are still unknown.
